Bill Bahnfleth's accomplishments in track and cross-country are legendary at Palatine High School. His work ethic and dedication set a standard of excellence that coaches appreciate and future runners strive to emulate. He won seven state medals in his career. He set a state record in the 440-yard dash in a time of 47.3 seconds his junior year. He defended that title his senior year in a time of 47.4 seconds. He also medaled in the 220-yard dash in a time of 20.9 seconds. He continues to hold conference meet records in three events as well as nine school records in individual and relay events after thirty-three years. For his accomplishments, Bill was voted the "Athlete of the Decade" (1960's) in all sports by Paddock Publications. Bill attended the University of Wisconsin and was a four-year letterman. He competed in the 440-yard dash and on the mile relay team. He ran on four Big Ten championship relay teams, as well as on the world record-breaking sprint medley relay team. He was the runner-up in the 300-yard dash at the Big Ten Championships inconsecutive years.
