Al and Sally Berman

Administrators • Coaches
Induction Year: 2003

The Palatine Community was very fortunate when Al and Sally Berman were hired in the early 1960s. The expectation of our administration, faculty, and Athletic Department for all new hires was to continue to develop the rich academic and athletic tradition of our school. The Bermans liked that idea so much that they devoted a combined 57 years to that objective. They used the classroom and athletic fields to teach, not only subject matter and sports skills, but, more importantly, they used these opportunities to teach life values. They prepared students to succeed and to contribute to society. They are remembered as dedicated teachers who demonstrated unconditional concern and support for their students and athletes. Using their wit and wisdom, they also mentored many young coaches and teachers.

Al served as an assistant coach in three different sports: football (5 years), wrestling (24 years), and baseball (4 years). He also was the head baseball coach (4 years). He was involved in over 300 victories as an assistant to four different head wrestling coaches. He was honored by the Illinois High School Association as the assistant coach of the year in 1987.

Working selflessly behind the scenes, Sally was a volunteer assistant. She kept statistics, counseled athletes and helped to upgrade the wrestling program.

In recognition for their contributions, the Athletic Department renamed the Holiday Wrestling Tournament the "Berman Wrestling Classic." This is the longest running Holiday Wrestling Tournament in the state.
